US stresses on Pakistan-India cooperation for SA peace
Washington, Saturday, May 23: As Congress party regained government in New Delhi, the Unite States Friday underscored the importance of cooperation between Pakistan and India toward ensuring peace and stability in South Asian.
“Obviously, we have seen reports recently without getting into any details, of intelligence sharing, which I think, denotes important cooperation that we think is needed on both sides in order to ensure peace and stability in the region,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said at the daily briefing.
The Press Secretary did not elaborate in reply to a question about how President Barack Obama intended to follow his avowed objective to engage the two regional powers in constructive diplomacy, now that India had a new government following general elections.
However, Gibbs noted that “obviously, he (President), in the past few weeks, been very involved in our discussions with Pakistan as it related to the meetings that were held here.”
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this week expressed the hope that Islamabad and New Delhi would be able to soon resume their dialogue to reduce tension in the region.
The Obama administration has been reiterating the need for reduction in tension on Pakistan-India border to allow Pakistan to focus more effectively on its fight against militants on its Western Afghan border. The News
