KU Students Protest Ujjain Shooting, 2 more Kashmiri youth harassed in Ujjain

Srinagar, Jan 24:  Hundreds of students of Kashmir University Monday staged a protest demonstration at the Press Enclave in Srinagar against the murderous attack on a Kashmiri student at Ujjain in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh (MP) on Saturday, January 21. Two more students of Rajouri had a narrow escape on Monday when unidentified motorcycle borne youth tried to assault them.

According to reports, two motorbike-borne youth accosted Shabbir Ahmad Malla of Botengoo, Sopore, doing M Phil at Ujjain University, and after seeking to know the way to the university, shot at him critically injuring him in the neck.

Shabbir was rushed to the local hospital wherefrom he was referred to Indore hospital. He was operated upon after the CT scan detected a bullet in his neck. He was then shifted to the intensive care unit where his condition is stated to be out of danger.

During their protest demonstration today, the KU students demanded that the assailants should be identified immediately and prosecuted for the murderous attempt on the Kashmiri student. They said Kashmiri students were being harassed in MP, a BJP-led Indian state, KO reports

Meanwhile, after the shooting of a Kashmiri student in Ujjain, two students from Rajouri had a narrow escape on Monday when unidentified motorcycle borne youth tried to assault them.

The duo, identified as Waqar Ahmad Malik and Tasavar Hussain are pursuing M.Phil Political Science in Vikram University Ujjain.

“Around 2 PM when we left our university campus towards our rented accommodation, the youth riding on a bike appeared from the nearby lane and called us. Aware of the recent attack on our friend Shabir, we ran away. They chased us but we managed to escape,” Waqar Ahmad told daily GK in Srinagar over phone.
 “After this incident we feel threatened. We immediately shifted to our friend’s place,” he added.

The JK students studying in MP told media men that there had been several minor incidents of harassments in the past as well. “We ignored such incidents considering those as the common. But the recent attack on Shabir has made us insecure,” a student from Islamabad studying in MP told media men on the condition of anonymity.

The repeated incident of attacks on students has triggered panic among hundreds of Kashmiri students and their parents studying in the BJP ruled state of India.
